After retiring from the NHL, Joe joined Comcast SportsNet as a game analyst for the Capitals.

In 1983, Reekie was originally drafted by the Hartford Whalers, but never signed with the team and re-entered the NHL draft two years later where he was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres.

He played for the Sabres, New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lighting, Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals.
